Dr. Leinen graduated from medical school in 1994 after completing his studies at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz (Germany).
After completing his residency in Anaesthesiology, he subspecialised in the fields of Intensive Care Medicine, Emergency Medicine and Palliative Care Medicine. He currently works as a senior physician at kardiological/thoracic surgery ICU ward of the Hospital Barmherzige Brüder in Trier (Germany).
Since 2000 he also works as a flight physician for Luxembourg Air Rescue/European Air Ambulance.
